WONKY SS BLACK GIRL
SS Girl character of unknown name, possibly 'N****r' Girl. The 'Wonky' puppet is an early puppet from the Pelham Puppet company in 1947 before the company became known as 'Pelham Puppets' in 1948. The red paper label is on the control. These characters are very rare. She is made differently to the puppets which are not from the Wonky era, with toggle legs and arms, see the images. Later puppets have metal strip knee joints, Wonky puppets have wooden joints. This puppet has a sweet face which is in good condition. She wears typical clothes with unfinished hem on the skirt and a pretty floral waisted blouse with two different materials used for the sleeves, the material is gathered to make it very full. Her mustard colour thick felt hat has minor moth nibble, no holes, with some 'jewels' attached to the front. Her hair seems to be synthetic rather than fur. She is in good condition generally. A minor pin pick hole in the orange skirt can be seen in the image of the skirt up showing the leg construction. The control looks unused and clean.
The box she is in is not the one she would have been issued in which would have had a red paper label with Wonky Toys Ltd. Her box is from the next blue label box 1948. The box is in shelf worn condition but sturdy construction.
